Think of the worst scenario you can come up with and it probably involves your going to a mental institution, huh? Well, don't worry. If you are going to be going there, you are going to have to work on the proper etiquette for reacting.
Steps
- Figure out whether or not they are serious. Some parents tend to think that bullying their children or using fear tactics will make them into better children. Odds are that if your parents ever suggest this, that they are not serious. If they're not serious, then have a discussion with them about how their parenting methods are offending or scaring you, making you fear for them everytime.
- Be calm. Freaking out will just prove the point, that you have some mental issues to work out. Instead, keep your voice level. No raising your tone. Keep it at a steady pace, don't speed up or slow down. You don't need to talk monotone, you can have expression, but a nice calm voice is really what you need here so that your parents will be neutral. Keep your body level as well. No slouching or being messy. Be upright and alert.
- Hold back tears. Sometimes it's not easy to hold emotions inside, but this conversation will probably be easier if you are not crying. Wipe your eyes and force yourself not to let any tears fall.
- Ask about the problem. Find out their reasoning for your parents wanting you to go to a mental institution. Have them give examples and share your thoughts on these said examples. Again, remain calm.
- Explain your feelings. If you are not comfortable going, ask for a second chance. However, if you want help, accept the situation and go with your parents to the institution.
- Get the help you need. Whether it be at home or at the place, try to make for a better you.
Tips
- Sit down while this conversation is going on.
- Try and understand your parents point of view and do as they say- they love you after all- and they are clearly conserned about you if they suggest something like this.
Warnings
- Don't get angry at your parents. They love you and just want what's best for you.
- Understand that they think that it is all for the best.
- Don't react quickly or make a scene they will definately think they made the right choise if you do this.
